Ford 2.3 Weber intake manifold and Ford inline 6 dual carb manifold
Ford 2.3 weber intake manifold and Ford inline 6 dual carb manifold are two different designs used on a number of Ford engines built in the USA and Europe. Ford has such a wide range of engines, if you include those going back to the 70s, that there are dozens of different manifolds and bolt patterns. Interchangeability can be a problem, as Ford used some Japanese intake manifolds on Courier 2.3 liter engines, which have a different bolt pattern from the other 2.3 liter jobs such as the 1998 ford escort zx2 2.0l mfi dohc intake manifold.
You can also get a ford 2.3 weber intake manifold designed for one single twin-choke Weber carburetor of the sort that was used on quite a lot of European Fords in the days before emission control. The Ford six-cylinder engines had simpler manifolds, with a pair of vertical carburetors feeding a simple six-branch manifold in the well-used ford inline 6 dual carb manifold.
Ford’s latest four-cylinder manifold is on the Focus SVT, built by the folk at Ford SVT. They have upped the power to 170 bhp which is not bad, but not that good compared with what you get in Europe from Ford. Like its European counterparts, the ford focus svt 2 stage intake manifold is a two stage job with long intake ducts which have flap valves in them which close off part of the length of the passage – which is a sort of U built off the main manifold – so that the intake pipes are shorter for running at high revs.
This is because the longer pipes give good low-speed torque, but the shorter pipes give better top end power over about 5,000 rpm. This ford focus svt 2 stage intake manifold is very much in line with current thinking of how to get maximum performance and good gas mileage from an engine these days. The intake manifold plays an important part.
This sort of design was not practical with the ford 2.3 weber intake manifold because there was not room under the hood for the two vertical carburetors and that long piping. These dual-length manifolds work best on V-engines where there is plenty of room – not useful in the good ole ford inline 6 dual carb manifold, but could have worked on some oldies like the 1998 ford escort zx2 2.0l mfi dohc intake manifold.
The latest Ford intake manifolds are made from plastic, and it is fairly easy to mold complex shapes and bolt them together to make a two-stage intake manifold like the one on the Ford Focus SV. If you are buying a used Ford V-6 or V-8 with a plastic intake manifold, like a Ford Mustang, you need to be sure it is not suffering from intake manifold leaks. This can need an expensive repair.
